Reflection Techniques

Reflection techniques have been used in many different areas to provide a certain magical effect. I was curious about the practical application of reflection in information signage, and opportunity arose to do so through the Graduate Media Design Program at Art Center College of Design. It began with researching of various materials that could deliver the text 'Media Design Program' instead of resorting to the typical vinyl printing. Starting with a Gobo light projector, which is a small light projector used for text and logos. This is most commonly seen in advertising and event displays. A text logo was designed for the MDP that would be easily and legibly projected. Taking the MDP studio space into consideration, utilizing our long entryway was the best option because it provides two viewing points: one upon entry, and the other upon exit. After a bit of experimentation, the best angle of projection created a reflection on the window of the front door. This way, visitors could read the sign from both sides of the door. This experiment led interest in making new wayfinding system and allowed me to find the beauty in life's embedded illusions.
