Technique and Technology

Here are three examples of spaces created from different medium; physical world, virtual reality in a web environment, and virtual reality in a physical setting. Through Illusions, for instance, the painted ceiling on the Church of St. Ignazio by Andrea Pozzo and Virtual Reality, we are able to recognize the development of techniques or technologies in different time periods with two dissimilar media. In a virtual chapel in Second Life, you can fly all over the rooms and study its fine details. It is quite amazing to see how they recreate the old church exactly the same as the historical building on a web-based space. However, I am wondering how this can make one to engage with the initial purpose of this church - all a symbols of enlightenment. Fascinating technologies enable us to create another level of design for this era and the future. Yet as a media designer, we need to consider how design can embrace technology and simultaneously craft a meaningful design methodology.
