PRODUCING

Producing is the most detail-oriented yet nebulous of all the major film functions. Most people cannot even define what a producer is!

There are the fakes, the entrepreneurs and then the nuts-and-bolts people who actually can get a movie made and delivered on-time and on-or under-budget.

The Producing Track at Art Center begins with all entry-level students taking a seven-week intensive seminar going over the basics - contracts, union shoots, non-union shoots, set management, producer responsibilities, crew realities, emergency behavior, interpersonal relations, etc. The next seven weeks are spent learning the basics of post-production - workflows, formats, titles, scoring, etc.

The second term, those with an interest in or aptitude for producing take one-on-one meetings with Art Center's senior production teacher. During these sessions (average once every other week), specific projects are reviewed - from script, to scheduling, to budgeting, to crew assembly, to equipment deals.

Then, the students may elect to continue this seminar in subsequent terms where there would be an emphasis on portfolio project development, career management, playing the film festival game, and negotiating.

To our knowledge, this Producing Track is unique amongst all film schools.
