ABOUT AREAS OF STUDY

Each Fall, the Broadcast Cinema program accepts 20 new writer / directors for a 4 term intensive immersion into the professional world of writing and directing. The 20 writer / director students moving through the program will be creating portfolio works with a significant amount of creative diversity in form, content, and style for narrative, commercial, documentary, music, and experimental categories as they progress.

Each of these writer / directors will want to collaborate with a filmmaking team that normally includes a Director of Photography, Production Designer and/or Art Director, Supervising Editor, and Producer for the production of their final portfolio projects prior to graduation.

The specialists enrolled in the program each Fall will also perform in their chosen roles for several of the 20 films that will be written and directed in the Directing courses during their 2nd and 3rd terms prior to their portfolio projects in terms 3 and 4. Our zero unit production terms are designed for our students to completely focus on portfolio production during their final phases of the program

Because the specialists are quickly immersed into production and practical collaborations, we do expect them to be capable of performing the tasks necessary for each role on a basic level. If you are looking for a program that will teach you the basics of cinematography, production design, editing, and producing, you may be required to take additional courses in Art Center's Undergraduate Film Program to initiate or refresh your skills. The Broadcast Cinema Program is designed for specialists to build their portfolios and experience the practical aspects of effective collaboration through a conservatory process with complete creative freedom for the conceptual aspects of filmmaking.

The Broadcast Cinema Program accepts 2-3 Directors of Photography, 2-3 Production Designers / Art Directors, 2-3 Supervising Editors, and 2-3 Producers each Fall with the entering group of 20 writer / directors.

The purpose of keeping the numbers for each specialization as low as 2-3 in each category is to insure that our specialist filmmakers have the opportunity to work with several directors during their time in the program.

Please refer to the specific specialists categories for more information: Cinematography, Editing, Producing, & Production Design.
