About

With little or no formal training in exhibition design Mari, Mia and myself were assigned this medium for the second part of our Com 2 project. So what does the MDP do to remedy this situation? Setup a exhibition workshop with Rob Ball, professor in the Environmental Design department, for a three hour crash course in creating an effective exhibition.

Notes

Once again, the larger theme of research and knowledge building before beginning the artistic process was emphasized. Besides being an extremely nice guy, Rob shared the following tips of the trade during this workshop:

- Research is everything

- Exhibition design is all about looking for multiple ways to communicate your message: it just happens to be in a spacial context.

- What's your position? What do you want to express? What do you want the visitor to takeaway so the piece can live on in some way?

- The spacial direction of your exhibition can be direct, radial, random or open.

- Write a screenplay of walking into this space. Look for little moments.

- Think of materials, light, color, organization, balance, scale, rhythm and flow.

- You need to believe in the message so you can be dynamic in your presentation of it.
