SUPER STUDIO: CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
Gummy Gus spent his 104th
birthday standing in line at the mission soup kitchen on Superior
avenue in downtown Cleveland in the middle of a thunderstorm
wrapped in a tattered 1945 surplus army jacket. He knew it
was Thursday because Thursday was chicken noodle soup day.
It was one of the few dinners he could gum-down after loosing
his teeth. It also was the day of the week when he called
Happier Days Assisted Living Care located in Phoenix Arizona,
collect, to talk to his two kids. Gus wasn't always a bum.
He planned his fruitful life thinking he would only live to
be 95. On his 96th birthday, he ran out of money. On his 98th
birthday, his family ran out of money to give him. At 104
and going strong, Gus spends his days and nights roaming the
streets of Cleveland dumpster diving and making friends with
the other elder-bums.
