Sea Level Rise
Designmatters

Designmatters is an Art Center design program that focus on design as a tool to make social changes. In Spring 2011, the program cooperate with Aquarium of the Pacific and NOAA on the global issue of sea level rise.

In a group with two industrial designers Mariana Prieto and Yana Kramskaya, we focus on the topic with children education. Despite from traditional top-down educational methodology, we hope children can naturally learn through interacting with the exhibition. The exhibition is located at the space outdoor and divided into History, Why, So What and How, four sections. The purpose is to Introduce the relationship between human and sea from historical perspective, explain the reasons and logics behind the scientific fact and suggest different adaptation and mitigation strategies.

The most crucial factor about designing children exhibition requires seeing things from a different angle. What makes sense to adults might not necessary logical to children. The level of communication needs to be adjusted in a way children can understand to be effective. Therefore, all the interactive games and information in the exhibition were persistently tested to make sure it is correctly and effectively deliver the message and provoke children's curiosity about SLR.
