How Tweens Describe the Future
During the interviews, we asked each of the 22 tweens to complete what we called the future word exercise. Each individual was asked to circle words in response to three questions about the future.

Once they had circled multiple words for each question, we asked them to indicate a single word for each question that had the most meaning to them. The exercise was meant to help us get a sense of their feelings of personal agency. Below is a sample of the running list of the top three most meaningful words that describe the future in general (blue), the tween’s own future (red), and their ability to influence their future (green) for each tween.
