Superstudio 2004-2005
Super Studio 2004-2005 was devoted to an investigation of tweens (ages 11-14) in relation to technology, engagement, and personal agency. The fall research term of the studio was a Graduate Funded Educational Project sponsored by Hewlett-Packard's Consumer Applications and Systems Laboratory.

Students interviewed eleven pairs of tweens (22 total) from Southern California. Looking for the unfulfilled desires or the unmet needs in the their lives, the students designed creative tools which utilized visual, material, narrative, and experiential means around “tween realities”. From this research, two books were created. The Design Research book documents findings and the creative tools, and the Creative Leap book captures the response to the research.
Mobo: Mobile Object
In the spring design term, the students designed, prototyped, and branded Mobo - a wireless, hand-held product intended to help tweens manage stress. Mobo was conceived as a mobile personal space, arising from a simple quote taken from tween interviews: "My room is my favorite object." Activated by fingerprint recognition, Mobo is sensitive to touch, temperature, heartbeat, pressure and motion. Mobo responds to the emotional states of its owner and to the presence of other Mobos as well.
