LAMP

Nicole Chan, plywood lamp, 2009

Close up, plywood lamp
Creating a lamp was much more challenging than I expected. Starting out, I knew I wanted to use found materials. True to this goal, I used plywood that had been tossed in a dumpster. I started by cutting the materials in strips, using wood glue to attach them together. Then I drilled holes through the wood to add spots for the light to shine through in a vertical pattern down the sides of the lamp. Finally, I secured the constructed material in a tear drop shape using a wooden hoop inside. The internal hoop also held the light bulb and wiring. The patterns that show through plywood are unbelievably beautiful. The light that was cast was wonderful and unique. A warm glow is generated that is reminiscent to me of a campfire.
