SUPER STUDIO 1 :: instructors: Anne Burdick, Lisa Nugent, Sean Donahue
Super Studio is a year long design-based group research course where we learn and practice our skills as design researchers. Through recruitment, interviews, design probes, analysis and designed interpretations, we work together to create media and design-based solutions based on our project goals and findings.
This year we have received the opportunity to research streaming media and families with tweens (children ages 11-14). How does streaming media affect family dynamics? How does streaming media affect interactions, conversations, memories, values, and relationships? What affordances can streaming media provide us? What potential does it have to enhance the relationships among family members in a household?
We recruited four families in and around the Pasadena area who we interviewed and researched using design probes. We wanted to find out how families interact, what they value in the home as well as what they value beyond the confines of their direct experiences. How do they communicate with each other? What is public, what is private? These were some of the curiosities we had, and we used design probes to try and discover those answers.
