Assignment

Design an interactive system for transportation (bicycle, car, mass transit, motorcycle, or ???). This includes designing how the interaction will work, what it will look like (physical interface and/or screen based interface), and the scenarios under which it will be used.

Overview

The Bristol Farms Grocery Cart Interface was completed for Phil van Allen’s Interaction Design 1 class at Art Center College of Design. At its best, our interface aims to empower shoppers by providing a personalized information system using touch screen technology.

After building a physical model of the interface, the design team demonstrates its potential functionality via projector.

After identifying an area of interest (grocery carts), we began researching various facets of design related to our topic: existing grocery cart technology, store layouts, and shopping iconography to name a few. And like most great ideas, we quickly learned that our interactive grocery cart was already on the market.

Yet as designers we saw an opportunity space to improve upon the current design by juxtaposing emerging technologies, such as touch screens, within a specific environment, Bristol Farms grocery stores.

Moreover, the intention of our design was not to promote consumerism per say. Rather, we wanted to empower the shopper by personalizing their shopping experience. If knowledge is in fact power, users of the grocer cart interface can customize their grocery cart to monitor their nutritional, dietary, environmental and monetary concerns in a quick and efficient manner.
