What is the value of Unexpectedness?
In psychology, interest starts from unexpectedness and surprise. When we are surprised, we try to accept or understand why we are surprised and as soon as we understand, we find enjoyment.
In general, unexpectedness is positively correlated with the intensity of the emotion. Other things being equal, unexpected positive things are evaluated more positively than expected ones, and unexpected negative things, more negatively than expected ones. "We find that so-called pleasure centers in the brain do not react equally to any pleasurable substance, but instead react more strongly when the pleasures are unexpected," Berns said. "This means that the brain finds unexpected pleasures more rewarding than expected ones, and it may have little to do with what people say they like."
People are already losing interest in fixed prototypes and receptive behavior in domestic robots for entertainment to sophisticated users. They expect their robot pets to be almost as good as robots they see in 3D movies. To keep people get interested we need unexpected situations.
Unexpectedness certain brings surprise and curiosity to the people but humans are wired to seek comfort, and as a result much of daily life is focused around familiar patterns and habits. When something threatens to break those habits, we feel uncomfortable and nervous. These negative feelings are easily avoided by continuing to live life the same way, rejecting change. I think it's important for people to break out of the comfort zone and take risks to open their minds and search for new experiences.

There are numerous resources/studies about animals behaviors and many scientists are still hoping to discover more information about some of their unsolved mysteries.
When we find strange, unexpected behaviors from those animals, we tend to get surprised and also excited about learning new knowledge, wonder why those animals behave that way and question what else can they do?
People tend to find human qualities in many unexpected behaviors of animals so they feel more connected and attached.

Bowerbirds are most known for their unique courtship behavior, where males build a structure and decorate it with sticks and brightly colored objects in an attempt to attract a mate.
The most notable characteristic of bowerbirds is their extraordinarily complex courtship and mating behavior, where males build a bower to attract mates. There are two main types of bowers. One clade of bowerbirds build so-called maypole bowers that are constructed by placing sticks around a sapling, in some species these bowers have a hut-like roof. The other major bowerbuilding clade builds an avenue type bower made of two walls of vertically placed sticks. In and around the bower the male places a variety of brightly colored objects he has collected. These objects — usually different among each species — may include hundreds of shells, leaves, flowers, feathers, stones, berries, and even discarded plastic items, coins, nails, rifle shells, or pieces of glass. The males spend hours arranging this collection. Bowers within a species share a general form but do show significant variation, and the collection of objects reflects the biases of males of each species and its ability to procure items from the habitat, often stealing them from neighboring bowers. Several studies of different species have shown that colors of decorations males use on their bowers match the preferences of females.
This inspiration helped me to develop one of my creature's unexpected behaviors.
