THE QUINTESSENTIAL INTERSECTION OF NOTHING
BASED ON THE FILM PARIS, TX
DIRECTED
BY WIM WENDERS
Initially my concept was to explore the idea of a journey, one theme of Paris, TX is the physical journey. What began as a book about travelling–roadtrips, highways, Jack Keroac–evolved into a more esoteric book about internal journeys. I chose to feature three short stories: Joan Didion, an excerpt on driving; Haruki Murakami, a story about sitting at the bottom of a well; Jean Richdpin, an psychological struggle of a man in a prison cell, called Bed of Straw.
I tried to capture the feeling of an existential journey through imagery, juxtaposition, and evocative texts. I focused on developing my idea by making every decision meaningful and sequencing to describe different kinds of interactions to support my concept, such as the turning of a page, opening up layers, and points of reflection.
