Push & Pull: Knob Project
The intention behind my Push & Pull knob project for Productive Interaction was to physically put into motion the mental struggle that we all battle with in our daily lives, how to balance work and play. I wanted to use a tug of war metaphor to show that we are constantly being pulled in two directions and it's difficult to maintain a balance. In the piece when one person pulls the rope one way it plays a combination of "work" sounds, cars starting, printers printing, people mumbling. When the rope is pulled the other direction it plays quiet, peaceful sounds, birds chirping, chimes, ocean waves. I wanted the sounds to be ambiguous so that although they were recognizable they were still abstract enough that the meaning could be left to the listener, and their own personal experience about what trying to maintain that balance meant to them.
