Description

"Narratives in Space" is a new form of story telling that combines space with narratives. By embedding stories in an environment the "readers" exist in, we are able to provide a more engaging sensory experience.

We decided to explore some possible techniques by using Norman Klein's fiction, "The Imaginary 20th Century"(http://www.imaginarytwentiethcentury.com/) as our sample content. The Imaginary 20th Century is a historical science-fiction novel about adventure of woman whose name is Carrie. Carrie was seduced in 1901 by four suitors, and each suitor had his own vision of the coming century. The Imaginary 20th Century is interesting, because the story exists between two spaces: the future that was envisioned in 19th century and the past which the reader knows to be true. The novel weaves history in with fiction to create a narrative that is both factual and fictional.

"The misremembering of the future is totally an immersive game about space between. It leaves a path for introversions and phantasmagoria. It is visualized in the subjunctive tense; that is, as what might have been, a parallel present; but always as a very solid thing, like ocean liners roaring at the dock."-Norman Klein-

The 20th Century they envision exists as a story, but is not the real 20th Century. Similarly, a pop-up book creates illusional spaces—the buildings, the birds, the people that pop out are tangible, yet not real. Because of these similarities, we brought elements from pop-up books into our exhibition in telling the story from the book. The affordances of a real space also enable possible incorporations of movies, shadow puppet theaters, and moving text in order to effectively communicate the imaginary tale of the 20th Century.
