syllabus

description :

A hands-on studio workshop for interactive design investigating practical and theoretical issues such as new design paradigms, project workflow, information design, interactive navigation, production methodologies, and interactive technologies. In addition, the course explores basic issues in interactive design such as "what is good about interactive media?" and "what is interactive storytelling?".

course structure :

The first section of the course will focus on interactive design and production. Students will work in teams to design and produce a web site, delivering milestones (e.g. design document, prototype, final version) on a formal schedule. During the first few weeks, separate seminars will be devoted to the essential technical aspects of web design for those students who do not have experience in these areas. Students with previous web experience can skip this portion.

The second section of the course will explore basic issues in interactive design, and students will design and produce an interactive story in their preferred interactive medium.

Technical skills will be covered throughout the semester in response to student needs.

objectives :

Upon completion of the course the student should be able to:

  • Discuss contemporary issues of interactive design
  • Design with new and experimental modes of interaction
  • Design and produce a medium size web site
  • Produce a professional level design document for an interactive project, including:
    • Information architecture
    • Interaction behavior
    • Media design
  • Use a formal design & production process for interactive media
    • Working with clients
    • Defining audience & requirements
    • Developing the design
    • Creating design documents
    • Building prototypes
    • Producing the project
    • Managing assets
    • Testing the project
  • Work successfully in a web production team
  • Create an interactive story

materials :

You should get an external FireWire drive for backups and extra storage. In addition, I recommend that you also get a USB storage device for backing up and storing smaller projects. Assignments and projects will be delivered electronically from the Art Center server.

grading :

Grading is determined by attendance, participation, and completion of all assignments. 80% of the grade is determined by the two major projects.
