Background

Many museum environments exhibit artifacts. In this proposal, I will examine Korea's largest private museum, the Onyang Museum of Cultural History, and its current means of displaying artifacts. The Onyang Museum is a classic case of a museum not regularly updating its exhibitions. Since itís opening in 1978, the way the museum delivers content concerning its displayed artifacts, especially, historical contents, has not been changes. In the year 2002, this situation is problematic. Since the museum opening its audience has been exposed to a variety of eye-catching media such as television, motion pictures, video games, and the Internet and has grown accustomed to easily accessing information. However, in the Onyang Museum, visitors are expected to view artifacts without information about their backgrounds. Currently this is the situation in many small and medium scale museums.

Folk Art

1. Folk art is a reflection of the lifestyle of era when the object was created and used.

2. Folk art does not have the same artistic value or visual pleasure as master art works.

3. Usually, the maker of a folk art object is unknown; however, information about why it was created, how it was used and by whom is often known.

4. Folk art has more value when we know its cultural, social, and personal background.
