A Defintive Shot?

In some ways, mug shots are the most unforgettable portraits that can be taken. And isn't this the point? The subjects are usually at their most vulnerable Hugh Grant) or embrace the moment (Tom Delay). But are they honest? Do they represent the whole person or just a moment in time?

Second Looks

Initially, I was drawn to Grace Oh's work and after returning to it a week later I don't know why. It actually seems kind of bland: subjects look relatively similar and the work doesn't offer anything new.

Second Looks

A unique brand or portraiture has sprung up in recent years that combines collage with portraiture. These pieces elevate a coach to the level of deity.

Manic Depressive?

I choose this image because I remember falling in love with this girl when I was a teenager. I thought she was just sooo beautiful, interesting to look at, bad-ass. This week I had a chance to watch Darkness and Light, a documentary on the photographer of this photo: Richard Avedon.

In short, I think Richard Avedon was probably a manic depressive. The high and low's of his art probably keyed him into certain human qualities, but that would be perpetuating stereotypes. He seemed like a bully to his subjects and ego-manic as a person. Yet his images are distinctively, he found his voice. I am not necessarily drawn to the photographer as artist- but this was never his intent. Nonetheless, Avedon creates a clear vision of his artistic voice.

Embracing the Grain

Ever since last weeks assignments, I have been totally drawn to the medium of cell phones. I really like its accessibility and honesty. The graininess indicates its medium and should be embraced. Its raw, amateur and fun. I think this medium could really be pushed.
