Barbie

When I was young, I used to play with a Barbie doll, especially with her hair and all the cool clothes and a house with all the miniature furniture. Almost everyday I invited many friends and played with them; we made stories that were based on our imagination and each person took turns. Sometimes in the bathroom we pretended were in a swimming pool or a beach sometimes in a playground or balcony pretending were in the outdoors traveling.

I collected possibly every single Barbie doll such as Barbie's little sister Skipper, her friends Ginger and Scott, Barbie's little brother Todd, Barbie's boyfriend Ken, many horses, dogs and many more, of which I even do notremember the names. These were gifts from my parents or grand parents. I loved to play with the pony's hair a lot. In my country in the early 1980s, it was really hard to get a Barbie doll, so every time my parents went a traveling or on a business trip to America, I begged them to get a new one for me on the way. I would do anything to get another new Barbie. The more Barbies you have, the more popular you are going to be than who do not have much of it. Those who did not have many Barbies ended up playing with least attractive dolls.
The fact that Barbie is an adult allows a multitude of little girls into the forbidden world of grownups, imitating their habits and attitudes, courtesy of the imaginative metamorphosis that occurs in children's play.
Two Barbie dolls are bought per second around the world, with 150 new models brought to the market every year. More than a decade later, I realize that this mass production of Barbie dolls in sweatshops somewhere in undeveloped countries makes me really uncomfortable. Just imagine 12-15 year olds making a Barbie doll. What are they going to think during their working time? Are they feeling the same way as other kids?
Nowadays, I am making a series of poster about abusing Barbies. Actually, it is a promotion campaign series for the movie I have been working on lately it's called synthetic lust. The story is about love, but a slightly different way of loving. It is about a guy who is in love with a woman who he thinks is an ideal woman.

Therefore, I chose a Barbie to use for the main character for the poster to represent this misconceptualized way of loving. I finally came to the conclusion that the obsessiveness of girls with dolls really dangerous for them because, this attitude will make them set other stereotypes for people, such as that of long blond hair, height, skinny perfect body, perfect outfitÉ The real world is not like that at all; you rarely see these kinds of people. Maybe only in mainstream movies or TV. All different kinds of people live together in this world. Some people are never desirable because they are over-sized, disabled, retarded, alcoholic, and so on.
Therefore, I wish this poster can help a little bit to break people's stereotypes formed by Barbie dolls.

"Art Center Students apply skills to real life issuesÓ That was the headline of the LA Korea Times newspaper's October issue. Actually, the first page of this newspaper suppose to show our story however, the attack on Sep 11th got this page, well, what can I say to that reallyÉ Anyway, it was the first time that my work is been published on the newspaper. Of course it is not a major one, but I can start from there. I just move forward a little bit. It was about my graduate study that was the one-year graduate project. Eight of us worked together for a year and made a transmedia campaign designed to inform high school student about Human genome Project. The subject was given by faculty and they also do not know what is it either. Of course it was really hard to work in group. As a result, during a year three people dropped out from this project. So, we had to take more than two tasks to finish this project. Sometimes, we want to just kill each other silentlyÉ However, we made a great accomplishment that I did not realized until I finish a whole year.

It was really great experience to me that I will never have a chance to do it in the future. It gave me a knowledge of how to collaborating and all the processes of developing a transmedia campaign.
The last not the least, the photo editor picked the one that everyone smiled except meÉ Well, I will remember it next time.
